The Dot is a story about a girl who is challenge by her teacher to make a mark on her paper, even if she "can't draw." Vashati jabs her pencil into her paper making a single dot. Her teacher has her sign the work and then displays it for all to see. From there Vashati takes it upon herself to make the best dot she can make. In a few short pages we watch inspiration transform the young girl.
Dot Day challenges us every year to make our own mark on the world. This year we used dots all day long.

One of my favorite parts of Dot Day is getting the chance to connect via Skype with another classroom to share dot day projects. My class connected with Mrs. Noland's kindergarten class all the way in Lubbock, Texas. They showed us their dot day plates and we shared our Dot Day blueprints made from legos or our Dot Day dots that came to life by using the Quiver app. Mrs. Noland's class was so excited about this app they even tried it themselves!
In math we used some subitizing dots to help us quickly recognize numbers 1-20. Students were able to create their own subitizing card and then played a memory game with a partner. In science we have been talking about properties of matter. We thought dot day would be a perfect way to expand the category of color. I asked the students if they knew what color black was. They were very confused by my question, but with a quick experiment found that black was actually made of blue, red, and yellow. They loved creating colorful dots from a single black dot! Dot Day was a great day of learning! I challenge all students to continue to make their mark on the world!
