Before Christmas break students had the opportunity to participate in the global wide event, Hour of Code. Our class had many oppotunities to try new coding apps, and explore many "unplugged" activities. We even had help from a few special guest. Students from Grapevine Middle School came by and taught us a great cup stacking unplugged activity!
This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. Students are so engaged and excited about coding. I love to see them grow in speed and knowledge.

Our main challenge of the week was sending codes for a secret picture to another first grade class. We paired with Mrs. Duty's class at Rosemeade Elementary. Every day we sent them a new line of code in order to make a letter. They did the same for us as well. By the end of the week we connected through Skype to share what words we had made.
Our secret word was SNOW and we found out their words were BE MERRY they even included a picture of a Christmas tree!

We ended the week exploring binary code. Students made braceletes by using binary to coded their initals. They loved wearing them around all day. It was like their own secret langauge that only they knew. It was such a fun way to end our Hour of Code week!
