Last week was full of activities! Red Ribbon week served as a reminder to students to make healthy choices for themselves. We even got a visit from the Tooth Fairy who reminded us the best ways to take care of our teeth. We also were able to Skype with a class from Bear Creek. We made a picture of a monster and wrote a description of what our monster looked like. There first grade class had to listen to our clues to see if they could draw a monster that looked like ours! Then we listened to them and drew their monster!

Check out these Scholar's awesome Cardboard Creations! They did such a wonderful job! Last week, Scholars were challenged to engineer a wall to help Mr. McGregor keep Peter Rabbit out of his garden. The wall had to be long enough and tall enough for a bunny not to pass or jump over. It also had to stand on its own and be strong enough to hold the rabbit back. Scholars used sticks, rocks, and "cement" to hep build their wall. We also Skyped with Ms. Philips who majored in agricultural science. She gave us so many facts about rabbits and what the best methods are for keeping them safely out of your garden. Be sure to check out the original designs on our Scholar Blog! This week scholars began learning about different rocks and how rocks make soil. We also learned that there are multiple types of soil. The students had a great time using our new science lab and exploring these resources! This Friday our school was lucky enough to receive an outdoor learning garden thanks to Real School Gardens. Our scholars participated in the opening ceremonies and contributed art work during our Big Dig day! Dot Day was this past Tuesday! Our class had pretty much everyone wearing some type of dots. The students created dot trees as our mark on the world. We shared them by Skyping with Miss Noland's kindergarten class all the way from Shallow water, TX. Our first unit in math has been to create graphs and analyze the data. We have graphed everything from favorite pets, to favorite ice creams, and even our favorite pair of shoes of one of our classmates. Students also had some time practicing graphing and counting tally marks in math centers this week. It's been a busy first week back at school. Our Cannon Scholars jumped right into engineering this week and completed 4 challenges using cups, sticks, and blocks. They had to build a tower on just one block, build a tower on one cup, make the tallest tower they could, and make a structure that has a part sticking out of it. We also were able to experience our new class set of tinker tools that were donated by Donor's Choose! The new school year is just around the corner. I'm so excited to start my 3rd year and meet my new scholars! A class set of engineering tools would be the best way to help my young engineers start off their year.
I just created a request for my classroom on Donors Choose: Building Our Future Today Give to my classroom by August 2, 2015 and your donation will be doubled thanks to Donors Choose Just enter the code SPARK on the payment page and you'll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100). Donors with receive awesome photos and our heartfelt thanks. If you know anyone who may want to help my classroom, please pass this along! Thank you so much! We had such a great time during Field Day on Friday. We played hard and cheered each other on! They even managed to earn themselves a first place ribbon! Our Cannon 1st grade team wants to make sure our students have the materials they need to to become the engineers of tomorrow, so we created two request for our classrooms at DonorsChoose.org: Engaging Early Engineers and Hard Hat Fairy Tales
Give to our grade level by April 15 and your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose.org. Just enter the code SPARK on the payment page and you'll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100). If you chip in to help our students, you'll get awesome photos and our heartfelt thanks! |
